As a member of the campus community, the Campus Food Bank is committed to building a greener University of Alberta. Here are just a few initiatives that are helping to reduce our environmental footprint:

Compost

In May 2012, we partnered with the University of Alberta Students’ Union to begin composting the Campus Food Bank’s organic waste. In the first day of the program, we composted over 100 pounds of waste!

ThinkRecycle

As part of the ThinkRecycle program, we accept donations of used ink toners and cartridges, cell phones, tablets and laptops, and digital cameras. These items can be on-campus mailed to our office or dropped off in a collection box outside our office. We receive money for the items sent in to the Think Recycle program because the ink cartridges are refilled or electronics are recycled and used for parts/precious metals.

Reusable Bag

To reduce the number of plastic and paper bags used for our food hampers, we accept donations of reusable tote bags. These reusable bags are used to store client’s food hamper items and clients are encouraged to bring in these bags to use on a regular basis.
