Campus Food Bank
Beliefs & Commitments

  • We acknowledge:

    that we operate in amiskwacîswâskahikan / ᐊᒥᐢᑲᐧᒋᐋᐧᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ (Beaver Hills House), on Treaty 6 territory and the homelands of the Métis peoples. Specifically, the University of Alberta built and continues to operate its campus on land unlawfully stolen from the forcibly removed Papaschase Cree, whose Nation continues to demand official recognition by the Canadian state.

    that all people in our campus community are treaty people. We each have a responsibility to understand our history so that we can honour the past, be aware of the present, and create a just and caring future.

  • We believe:

    that equitable access to food and food education is absolutely necessary to engage in inquiry, maintain curiosity, nurture creativity, and be an engaged citizen in a post-secondary institution.

    that food access at University of Alberta in amiskwaciwâskahikan is inequitable and especially fails students who are Indigenous, Black, queer, trans, newcomers, on international student visas, managing mental and physical disabilities, and/or supporting dependents.

    that true food sovereignty on this land is only possible if stewardship is returned to the original caretakers of this territory (#LandBack).

  • We commit:

    to foster a dignified and safe experience for clients, volunteers, staff, and everyone in our spaces;

    to name and address racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, xenophobia, and any violence towards each other in our space;

    to center client voices and perspectives in strategic and operational decisions related to food access and food education;

    to engage clients in feedback and provide transparent reporting about ongoing successes and challenges in providing equitable services;

    to support the learning and development of those in our spaces and prioritize respect, humility, and generative inquiry to improve ourselves and our services (see our resources page);

    to work diligently towards reconciliation from our individual and collective positions of influence, including advocating for food sovereignty in our local environment.

    in these stated ways, to advocate and fight for a University of Alberta where everyone has access to food and food education.
