Why do we need a Fresh Food February Fundraiser?
Across the country, more and more food banks are finding that they need to purchase food in order to provide adequate food to our community members, and the Campus Food Bank (CFB) is no exception; we are a part of the 80% of Canadian food banks that needed to purchase food in 2025 [1]. The ever-increasing usage of the CFB comes as no surprise to us, considering that food bank visits across Alberta have increased 21.8% within the past year [2] and that food costs across the country have inflated 25% over the past 4 years [3]. That level of food cost inflation is being felt by our community members; 73% of respondents to our most recent user survey cited rising grocery prices as driving them to access the CFB’s services. The CFB is also feeling the pressure from inflation, as just last year from February to August, we spent nearly $60,000 on food for our community.
We need your support, if we are to continue promoting food security in providing nutritious and fresh food to our community—an essential component of academic success [4]. Let’s work together to make sure that our community only ever hungers for knowledge, not food! We are aiming to raise $30,000 this February.
Help us fill our shelves and refrigerators with fresh food during these chilly months until we begin to receive produce donations. Just last year, we received over 3,000 lbs of produce from our local growers, like Prairie Urban Farm and Coyote Lake Lodge! But until that bounty is grown and harvested, we need to continue purchasing fresh food.
